It Is Well With My Soul

To anyone who dosn't know the story behind the Hymn 'It Is Well With My Soul', you really need to read it.





This hymn was written by a Chicago lawyer, Horatio G. Spafford. You might think to write a worship song titled,'It is well with my soul', you would indeed have to be a rich, successful Chicago lawyer. But the words,"When sorrows like sea billows roll ... It is well with my soul”, were not written during the happiest period of Spafford's life.


On the contrary, they came from a man who had suffered almost unimaginable personal tragedy.Horatio G. Spafford and his wife, Anna, were pretty well-known in 1860’s Chicago. And this was not just because of Horatio's legal career and business endeavors. The Spaffords were also prominent supporters and close friends of D.L. Moody, the famous preacher.


In 1870, however, things started to go wrong. The Spaffords' only son was killed by scarlet fever at the age of four. A year later, it was fire rather than fever that struck. Horatio had invested heavily in real estate on the shores of Lake Michigan. In 1871, every one of these holdings was wiped out by the great Chicago Fire.Aware of the toll that these disasters had taken on the family, Horatio decided to take his wife and four daughters on a holiday to England. And, not only did they need the rest -- DL Moody needed the help. He was traveling around Britain on one of his great evangelistic campaigns.


Horatio and Anna planned to join Moody in late 1873. And so, the Spaffords traveled to New York in November, from where they were to catch the French steamer 'Ville de Havre' across the Atlantic. Yet just before they set sail, a last-minute business development forced Horatio to delay. Not wanting to ruin the family holiday, Spafford persuaded his family to go as planned. He would follow on later. With this decided, Anna and her four daughters sailed East to Europe while Spafford returned West to Chicago. Just nine days later, Spafford received a telegram from his wife in Wales. It read: "Saved alone."


On November 2nd 1873, the 'Ville de Havre' had collided with 'The Lochearn', an English vessel. It sank in only 12 minutes, claiming the lives of 226 people. Anna Spafford had stood bravely on the deck, with her daughters Annie, Maggie, Bessie and Tanetta clinging desperately to her. Her last memory had been of her baby being torn violently from her arms by the force of the waters. Anna was only saved from the fate of her daughters by a plank which floated beneath her unconscious body and propped her up. When the survivors of the wreck had been rescued, Mrs. Spafford's first reaction was one of complete despair. Then she heard a voice speak to her, "You were spared for a purpose." And she immediately recalled the words of a friend, "It's easy to be grateful and good when you have so much, but take care that you are not a fair-weather friend to God."


Upon hearing the terrible news, Horatio Spafford boarded the next ship out of New York to join his bereaved wife. Bertha Spafford (the fifth daughter of Horatio and Anna born later) explained that during her father's voyage, the captain of the ship had called him to the bridge. "A careful reckoning has been made", he said, "and I believe we are now passing the place where the de Havre was wrecked. The water is three miles deep."


Horatio then returned to his cabin and penned the lyrics of his great hymn.The words which Spafford wrote that day come from 2 Kings 4:26. They echo the response of the Shunammite woman to the sudden death of her only child. Though we are told "her soul is vexed within her", she still maintains that 'It is well." And Spafford's song reveals a man whose trust in the Lord is as unwavering as hers was.It would be very difficult for any of us to predict how we would react under circumstances similar to those experienced by the Spaffords.


But we do know that the God who sustained them would also be with us. No matter what circumstances overtake us may we be able to say with Horatio Spafford...

Freshly Squeezed

Today we did a bunch of things. I went for a run for the first time in forever, and discovered the Saskatchewan air and my asthma hate each other (and also that I'm out of shape), we swept and swiffered and disinfected the whole downstairs floor, we played outside and walked around the whole yard, we juiced 12 oranges and then sat at the table and drank it with straws, and we jammed to my new excersize video. Amaris did squats and a few jumping jacks. Well the arm part of the jumping jacks. We made asparagus, mushrooms, steamed carrots and broccoli, bbq-ed chicken and salmon and broccoli cheese rice for dinner. Then went to the store for bread for David's lunch. My goodness by the time Amaris' was in bed I was about ready to collapse, she's been super emotional and whiney the past little while, it wears on my nerves like nothing else having her hanging off of my leg crying ALL DAY. Deep breath. I know this is just temporary!

Well We Did It

We finally did it. We bought a jogging stroller! It only took (well lets see how old is Amaris) 15 months to do it! We've been looking and meaning to get one since she was born, we are the world's slowest buyers! We cracked and just went for it and got the king of all double jogging strollers, the Chariot Cougar. It's big, it's beautiful, and it glides like Elvis Stojko. We got a double for obvious reasons, the last thing we'd want to have to do is get one, just to have to sell it in six months to upgrade to a double! Sheesh that'd take us three years!

The stroller has so many different attachments, you can get two front swivel wheels, one big jogging wheel (the one we got) a trailer hitch for a bike, and hiking harness or a cross country skiing attachment, you can get ski's for it! Both the hiking and skiing one is pulled by you, like dog sled style.

We are super excited, the plan is for David to run and me to bike every night together! I'll tell you how it goes! Funny sidenote, the stroller is designed to just barely fit through the basic doorway, to give maximum space for the two kids in side, but since our house is so old we don't have 'basic' doorways. Yes, we cannot get it into our house.

Pink Bucket Hat


The weather has been amazing, the past couple days were all about shorts and pink bucket hats. We've tried to spend quite a bit of time outside, I even tried to teach Amaris how to play Bocce, but she couldn't quite grasp the concept! Maybe next year. :)

On a side note, she is totally enthralled by her pretty dress from Grandma Marks, isn't it beautiful? Whenever she sees it hanging in the closet she won't stop begging until I get it down for her, or put her in it. Watching her putter around in it, dancing, so cute!













Little Girl

I finally got around to creating a schedule of sorts, for me and Amaris (in this case 'me and Amaris' is grammatically correct! haha). Anyways, it includes fun things for Amaris like Play Doh and colouring, and fun things for me like clean the bathrooms. I'm trying so hard to get our house into order, and with no friends here, no family, and a husband who works often six days a week, it's all on me! It feels like it's taken all month just to get unpacked! Pregnancy hormones and extreme morning sickness that isn't just in the morning, hasn't helped. Sorry I'm done with my excuses!
So the schedule is going decent, obviously things don't always go according too, but it's the effort that counts.



I also learned a valuable lesson, never let your one year old see you smelling her new smelly markers. Monkey see, monkey do. Except her aim isn't very good. Now we never colour without her shoving the felt pens up her nose and sniffing. If it wasn't so messy, it'd be really cute!

The Three (and a half) Marks


Well I guess I will have to change the name of my blog to 'The Four Marks' as of October 2010! We are expecting October 23rd! I was looking through Amaris' earliest pictures and it started getting me super excited to have another teeny tiny newborn who is not running all over the place but instead will just lie on me and sleep, I miss that. We're super excited to be adding onto our family! The health care in Saskatchewan is aweful, but it'll all work out in the end!

We were so blessed with our first pregnancy to have no complications, and a beautiful healthy girl. I keep praying every it will go the same with this pregnancy, it's so amazing to be blessed with a healthy family. David and I both are hoping for another girl, because Amaris and this baby will be so close in age! We won't be bummed about a boy either though, since we don't have one yet! Basically either way we're pumped!

I'm still super sick, often all day, so i can't wait for that to be over!

Well, off to take care of the child outside of my belly!

Daisy Dukes

Well Amaris got to wear shorts for the first time since last summer, how exciting! I can't even handle how cute it is to watch her chubby little legs run around. She also wears her 'pretty' all the time (the Mardi Gras style necklace) it cracks me up.

She's really developing a personality! She likes to wear her pretty, she's in LOVE with her Daddy, and her stuffed Platypus who we call Pladdy. Original, I know. She gets a meatball sub if we go to subway because she is in love with anything with pasta sauce on it. Her favorite thing in the world is anything round, I hear the word 'ball' about 200 hundred times a day. She uses her left hand more than her right hand, which she has always done. She loves scribbling on a notebook with a pen. She likes it when we draw a 'ball' on her hand, and spends the rest ofthe day pointing to her hand saying 'ball'. She sleeps with her bum in the air (I will be so sad when she stops doing this). She likes being outside more than inside, but dosn't like having dirty hands. She dosn't play with any baby toys except a ride on ice cream truck which she sings alont with. She has a 10 minute attention span. She hates the car, or the truck, because being confined is apparently aweful. She sings 'Down' camethe rain and I just want to be a sheep 'baa baa baa'. She likes to eat whole apples, which she carries around the better half of the day sometimes. She dances like nobody is watching.

Pearls

This morning we found a big box of my jewelry and the Bug thought it was the best thing ever. I love having a girl. It started with the pearl necklace, and then she had to put every single one on, and all the bracelets too. She also did a front flip off the bed this morning and landed spread eagle on her back. She's super tough though, her lip quivered a bit as a cuddled her but she didn't cry. Her pain tolerance is crazy high.
